League Record !

Posted by Chris Lowe

Merstham 3rd X1 202 for 9 declared

Wallington 121 for 8

Being put into bat on a good flat track was an unusual experience for the 3rds. All the normal things happened after that, middle order collapse, getting out to stupid shots, moaning about how unfortunate they were etc  etc.... then at 121 for 9 about par for the course as it were Omer Shuja(31*) and Chris Lowe(31*) put on an undefeated 81 runs for the 10th wicket ! Yes, I could write that again.!!! A new League record !!!!! Lucky? Of course, but who cares. Safyan Aslam scored 45 runs earlier on and opener Farook Naseer 17, nothing much else worth mentioning.

In return John Young recorded his best bowling performance with 9 overs 2 maidens 5 for 17, excellent. The only problem was is that we did not bowl them out. A thoroughly deserved Winning Draw, the only team today not to win but, we probably felt just as much satisfaction as a win, because to score so many runs and declare is a very rare event. Congratulations to the 1's and 2's on their victories. 600 runs scored by all three teams. This club is really making progress.

Saturday 2nds Report

Posted by Ray Shinners

June 21st 2nd XI home to Wandgas.
Wandgas 89 for 10 - Merstham 90 for 5
Merstham won by 5 wicket.
Merstham made it three wins out of the last four matches with a good win at home to Wandgas, Ian McGillivray taking his first 5 wicket haul to set up the win. At 83 for 3 Wandgas lost their last seven wickets for six runs to a mixture of good pressure bowling and catching.
After a morning of persistent rain and mizzle the toss proved important and Wandgas were put in on a wet and greasy track. After scoring 150 the week before it was a great relief to see Cosine go early as Ghulam Hussein again picked up two early wickets but steady progress at over three an over was being made. James Lowe bowled a good opening spell and deserved his late wicket while Ray Shinners found it difficult to make any inroads. Up stepped Ian McGillivray and after good spells in previous weeks for little reward it all came right. Ray Shinners took a sharp catch at leg slip to dismiss the dogged Saffraz and further catches from Neil Maplesdon, Simon Layzell and Jason Kyte and an LBW brought the innings to an end in 34.3 overs.
Again a low total was seen off without to many upsets as Merstham reached 39 for 1 at tea but with less than fifty needed two quick wickets quickened the captains pulse rate. Pinch-hitter Ghulum Hussein (15) restored some calm but when he and debutant Aidan Helmbolt (who scored a positive 22) went quickly order was restored by the experienced Mike Wadsley (12no) and dependable Niel Mapplesden (14). Against a mixture of aggressive pace and turning spin they calmly collected the required runs to ensure another early finish.
With Manish Patel promoted to the First team it was important that the runs were shared around but new player Helmbolt showed good promise as a bowler with a crucial wicket to match his top score and sharp fielding. Young Jason Kyte gained more experience and took his two catches well while Maplesdons no frills wicket-keeping continues to be underestimated. Good bowling from McGillivray and Lowe capped the day for the captain.
Selection has been made far more difficult as competition for places hot’s up !

3rds win again

Weybridge Vandals 104 all out

Merstham 106 for 7

Putting the opposition in at The Hawthorns for the first time, without any hesitation, Weybridge Vandals were soon having problems with the opening Merstham attack of Safyan Aslam and Liam Powell. Never looking that confident they were finally bowled out for 104 with skipper Andy Ayres top scoring with 26. John Young,s first ball of the new Fullers season saw him hitting the stumps, not bad for starters. Safyan finished with 4 for 22, Liam 2 for 26 and JY 3 for 20. These figures were helped with some excellent catches from Ameer Pasha(3), Chris Lowe and good work from keeper Dan Sheriff a catch and a clever stumping.

Now batting is not this teams strongest suit and it took a classy innings of caution by Shakir Khan, starting his first full season at the club to show us the way.He carried his bat for 31 with some useful contributions along the way from Dan Sheriff(10) John Young (9)and Gary Powell(8). Old Tiffs at home next week, 1.30 start.

3rds off to convincing start

Posted by Chris Lowe

The 3rd XI have won their first game of the season by 95 runs, a friendly away to Reigate Priory VI.

Batting first, Merstham started slowly with only John Young (36) putting in a significant contribution from the top order, which saw the loss of 3 wickets without score. It was left to the lower order to pick up the run rate and post a respectable total. A vital last wicket partnership from Farooq Naseer and Safyan Aslam saw the total reach 145-9 off 40 overs.

The Merstham attack started with Safyan and Liam Powell, who were told to pitch it up on a slow and damp pitch, Powell producing a wicket with his first ball. With good accurate bowling from a muliple seam attack, Merstham bowled Priory out for 50. Wickets were shared by Safyan, Liam, John Young, Omar, Farooq and Gary.

This was a tremendous start for the team and spirits were high. We now look forward to our Fullers League campaign with great expectation.

As usual the thirds put in another fine bowling and fielding display. However, if we are to improve on our league position this year the batting must improve. Once this is achieved we shall be a force to be reckoned with!
