Match Report:
Merstham 2nd X1 opened their league campaign with a convincing win at Frimley this weekend. Having lost the toss and been put into bat on a damp and drizzly afternoon, the Merstham openers Jeff Spencer (40) and Richard Maysey (33) got the team off to a very steady start and quickly established a 50 run opening stand. When Frimley finally removed the Merstham opening pair they continued to be faced with some very positive batting from the Merstham top order with new skipper Rob Young (26) Freddie Swift (22) Neil Maplesden (48) and Kent Tristram (41) all providing brisk and significant contributions to the Merstham total. Rob Young took the decision to declare at 245/9 from 42 overs to give Frimley a challenging target of 246 off a minimum of 53 overs, more importantly this would give the Merstham bowlers enough time to bowl the team out and secure the full 20 points for the win. With Merstham in the field and runs in hand they immediately went on the attack and the Merstham opening bowlers of Imran Aslam (3-29) and Safyan Aslam (0-32) soon had the Frimley top order under pressure. Frimley opening batsmen Darry Woodford (33) continued to provide resistance until he was finally removed by David Loader (2-1). It was this dismissal that proved to be a significant point in this match and with two new batsmen at the crease it was the second bowling change that proved to be clinical. With pace off the ball man-of -the-match Ameer Pasha produced astonishing figures of 3.3-2-1-5, twice having been denied a hat-trick and removing the Frimley lower order in very short time. A fine catch from Freddie Swift off the bowling off Pasha signalled the end of the innings with Frimley having posted 68 all out from 24 overs in reply. This was a very impressive all round performance from this Merstham team who entertain Old Tenisonians this weekend at Quality St in their 2nd league game of the season.
