Match Report:
Merstham 2nd X1 had a frustrating afternoon at quality street this weekend having secured a winning draw against Whiteley Village.
Having been put into bat on the slow Merstham wicket, skipper Rob Young (50) and Jeff Spencer (112) put on a solid opening partnership of 119. It was the first century opening stand for Merstham this season as they continue to impress with the bat.
With Richard Maysey falling cheaply, Jeff Spencer shared an 82 run stand for the 3rd wicket with Martin Fisher (30no) before being dismissed for a solid 112 trying to push on as Merstham approached a declaration. Merstham eventually declared on 219-3 from 44 overs giving the visitors a target of 220 from 51 overs for victory.
Having taken the old ball Merstham openers Adeel Ahmed (1-10) and David Loader (3-14) both took early wickets as the home side looked to push on for a victory.
The Whiteley village batsmen dug in to frustrate the Merstham bowlers however and Safyan Aslam was very unfortunate not to have returned more than 2-30 in a great spell of bowling. Peter Roberts, the pick of the visitors batsmen was eventually dismissed for 69 but the visitors closed on 178-8 securing a losing draw in the process.
