Esher CC 3rd XI vs Merstham CC 3rd XI

Merstham CC – 113 All Out

Esher CC- 114-3

Merstham cc’s first venture into the Surrey championship ended in disappointment as they succumbed to a 7 wicket defeat at the hands of Esher CC. Merstham captain Justin David lost the toss and was put in to bat by the Esher Captain on what was a damp and fairly green wicket.  Omar Shuja was the pick of the Merstham batters, battling to a much needed 41 as the other Merstham batters struggling to cope with the conditions and wickets regularly fell around him.

Merstham took to the field knowing they had to keep it tight and take early wickets. Merstham thought they got the breakthrough after the first ball with Ian McGillivray fantastically catching at point only for the delivery to be called a no ball. From here the Esher batters looked as if they were in a rush to knock off the runs. However, Lithon Tarofdor bowled a very tight line and was unfortunate not to pick up any wickets. This Bowling was backed up with wickets from Ian McGillivray and John Deans making his league Debut for Merstham CC. The Pick of the bowlers was Martin Bovell, also making his league debut, finishing with 1 wicket but  bowling 5 maidens giving away 13 runs from his 9 over’s. There were a couple of controversial moments in the game as McGillivray thought he got the Esher number 3 caught behind, however, the Esher batsman did not walk and the excepted finger did not go up from the umpire. Later on in the game déjà vu, Bovell thought he had the Esher number 5 caught behind, again the batter did not walk and the umpire’s finger did not rise.

A lot of positives to take from this game, Merstham bowled and fielded excellently but were always going to struggle after setting such a modest total of 113.
