Match Report:

Another week, but same old story for the 3rd 11. We turned up at Oxted full of hope and optimism ahead of this game only for our inconsistencies with the bat to bite us on the backside again!!!

Skipper Justin David lost the toss again (only a matter of time until one is won), and Merstham were put in to bat on a very green wicket. John White and Malcolm Burt made a solid start for Merstham with John playing well for a solid 31. Malcolm stuck around for a much needed 18 with no one else making a score of any note. Ian McGillivray seems to have become MR reliable at number 10 with a solid 9 not out.  Again Merstham sets a disappointing target of 108.

Merstham went on to the field confident that if they got an early break through then they could make a game of this. This breakthrough came in the second over of the game with Jawad Riaz claiming his first wicket for Merstham cc and finishing with figures of 2- 30. At the other end David was bowling a tight line and was rewarded with figures of 3-27.  Merstham had Oxted on the rocks at 50-5. McGillivray was brought on in an effort to finish off the tail and very nearly did so chipping in with two wickets for 20 runs. However, Oxted managed to keep their nerves despite the efforts of the Merstham bowlers and hit the winning runs with 2 wickets to spare.

Again it was very pleasing to see a battling performance in the field from Merstham; however our inconsistencies with the bat could prove to be our down fall as the season moves.  Although it was a defeat, there is still great optimism within the team and hope to claim our first points in the championship this week against Walton on Thames
