Matthew Lewis Merstham Cricket Club will host the fifth annual Matthew Lewis Memorial Shield match on Sunday (May 25), when Mogador Wanderers are the visitors to Quality Street.

This year, for the first time, money will be raised for charity, Winston’s Wish, in memory of Matthew, who played for both clubs and died of a heart attack aged 41 in December 2009.

The charity was set up in 1992 to meet the needs of bereaved children, young people and their families, offering support and guidance.

Matthew will be well known to many past and present members, having played at junior and senior levels at Merstham, along with his brother Joseph and their father Allan, who is a vice president, life member and former chairman who bowled the first ball in the club’s centenary match in 1964.

About 150 people attended last year’s match, among them many who would have known Matthew through his cricketing days at both teams.

They would appreciate your support again this year, when fundraising activities will include selling burgers and sausages, as well as putting on a raffle, with prizes including vouchers for Chalk Hills Bakery, Reigate, a hamper of General Mills products and PlayStation games.

An auction will also be held, of items including a signed Ben Stokes red England shirt and a Kumar Sangakkara signed Sri Lanka shirt.

Merstham and Mogador, who have won this Shield three times, have played four times for it in total. This year’s match begins at 2pm.

More details about the charity can be found at www.winstonswish.org.uk/about-us/ where donations can also be made.
