Sunday season ends with a Sharp flourish
Merstham’s Sunday side finished their season with an entertaining defeat to our friends – and in many cases former team-mates - from Mogador.
On a bright September afternoon, Merstham won the toss and elected to bowl first. Good opening spells from Bobby Sharp and Mike Hanlon initially kept Mogador in check, with Lithon Tarofder also weighing in with a fine three wickets. Mogador, however, were indebted to former Merstham skipper Alex Hewitt, who hit some massive blows to reach a superb 97 not out, taking Mogs total to 230.
Merstham consistently lost wickets at critical times in their reply, with Sunny Bowry briefly keeping the hosts up with the run rate, with a hard hitting 27. As wickets fell regularly, Merstham reached 137-9, before a highly entertaining 10th wicket partnership of 58 from Bobby Sharp and Terry Garrett took Merstham up to 195, with Sharp finally finishing on an excellent 69, and Garrett unbeaten on a fluent 1 not out.
An enjoyable end to the season despite finishing on the losing side for Merstham, with all eyes now turning northwards to Lord’s on Tuesday.
