Weekend round-up: 2nds win title, too
Merstham Cricket Club’s first team, already champions, finished the season as they have done for much of it by winning, while the second team were also confirmed as champions in their division.
Meanwhile the third team only managed a few overs bowling in reply to posting 194 all out at Chessington before rain forced an abandonment to leave them third in the division with one game left.
Unfortunately, by the time the rains came, the fourth team were back in the clubhouse at The Ring licking their wounds over a Bharat Sahani special brew cup of Indian tea after defeat to Beddington 5ths, leaving them fourth in their league with one game left after a much improved season.
West End Esher, visitors to Quality Street to face Fuller’s Brewery League Division One Champions Merstham, played through some rain in pursuit of points which could have earned them promotion.
But they were bowled out for 116 in the 26th over chasing Merstham’s 182 as the hosts finished the season on more than 300 points (303) for a second season running.
After Merstham won the toss, Joe Shinners made 32, Ashar Syed 20 and Noman Javed 19 and Ed Loader, predecessor of Nav Saeed as captain, returned to make nine.
Tharusha Tilakarathne scored 31 to take his runs tally this season to 330 and Humayoon Nasir 21 while No 11 Asim Jafferi scored 21. John Loxton took 4-35 off seven overs bowling No 6 for West End, who finished the season in third place.
In reply, Loxton scored 22 and Ross Ashby scored 26, top scoring in the visitors’ reply as Ammar Tahir ripped through the top order with 3-24 off seven overs.
Suliman Younis took 2-42 and Asim Jafferi took the last four wickets for 10 off 3.5 overs.
The second team topped the Fuller’s 2nd XI Premier by three points through an abandonment which gave them four.
They batted first with Jason Drewett opening with 35, Jason Kyte scoring 48 and Mark Beckford 19 on the way to 180 all out.
Woodmansterne, who finished the second third, were one wicket down when the rain came.
The thirds scored 194 after 43 overs, Ben Carter top scoring with 40 followed by Asim Ashraf on 27 and James Lowe on 23, with most players making see doubles - that is, making double figures.
John Coleman had taken the only wicket when Chessington were on 77 and the rain fell.
The fourths have been a stronger unit this season, but other clubs have strengthened through the season, too.
Opener Kashif Noon scored 31 but nobody else could really get going against Beddington 5ths, who had a tight, strong bowling attack.
The score was about 25 after 17 overs, with Beddington fourth team captain Dan Bainbridge tightening the screw with an even pacier spell, taking his best figures of the season - 5-6 off 8 with 2 maidens.
The hosts were 71 all out, wicketkeeper Rob Wood second top scoring with 12, made up of two fours and two twos.
Tony Rickards (1-26 off 3) took a wicket with his first ball, while Omer Shuja took the other (1-27 off 5, 1 maiden) as Beddington made the runs in the 10th over. Noon couldn't repeat his stunning shoulder high catch of the previous week, while Shuja regretted rejecting the information manager's advice for a fly slip, as the ball was sliced over the cordon.
William Brown scored 53, in his first game for the fifths, having played three fourth team games this season and for the thirds last season.
