Friends and family of Terry Garrett gathered to witness his ashes being interred around an oak tree that was planted in his memory at Quality Street on Sunday.

Players from Merstham and opposition Mogador Wanderers joined other spectators and family members during the tea interval of Sunday's match as Terry's widow Margaret and family placed the ashes around the tree, which sits between the club and Reigate Hill Golf Club.

About 35 wellwishers held moments of silence to remember Terry, who died in the spring aged 68 after being diagnosed with cancer at the turn of the year. He was a regular member of the Sunday seconds until last summer and had been treasurer for a couple of decades until January 2014.

Chairman Graeme Attridge said a few words on behalf of Margaret, who has sent a "big thank you" to all club members for their support in the past six months since Terry died and for helping to meet his requests, including planting the tree. She thanked Graeme for his speech and groundsman Bernard Feist for arranging the arrival of the tree.

Mogador Wanderers, many of them former Merstham CC members and players, put up a stiff total of 252 in 35 overs, with Merstham's reply reaching 214-9.
