U9s have great season with nine wins from 10

The U9s are having a grand old season.  Other than an injury-plagued loss to Sanderstead, the team have won every game to give them nine victories from 10 matches.

Four of the recent matches have seen relatively close, despite playing two of them with only nine players:

Salfords - won by 15 runs (Thomas Cook 2 wickets; Jacob Law 23 runs, Lyle Wesson 11)

Horley - won by 45 runs (Hamdan Rashid and William Telford 2 wickets each; Lyle 21, Jack Floyd 10, Roman Cameron 10)

Felbridge & Sunnyside - won by 14 runs (Roman 2 wickets; Jacob 29, Roman 16, Matt Cripps 11)

Caterham - won by 31 runs (Seb Parsons and Jacob 2 wickets each; Matt 23, Jacob 15)

But the best performance of the season so far undoubtedly came in the game against Reigate Priory.

Merstham batted first, and a hat-trick in the first over was somewhat of a set-back.  But the team quickly regrouped and tore into the Priory bowling attack. Matt (16), Jacob (36), Matty Beggs (10), Roman (11) and Will John-Cox (14) were the big scorers in a total of 158-6 (net 334).

The Priory team were understandably shocked, but that was nothing compared to what occurred when they batted.  The Merstham team bowled and fielded brilliantly, with our pace attack simply blasting them away.

Matty and Hamdan both took two wickets, and there were three run outs.  But undoubtedly the star of the innings was Will, who took three wickets in his two overs bowling and six catches.  Yes - SIX catches in just 20 overs...!

Reigate ended on 84 for 13 (net 232) - a Merstham win by a giddy 102 runs.

Most pleasingly, the squad as a whole are really developing in playing the "Merstham way” - all players getting regular opportunities to play games in an encouraging atmosphere, and good sportsmanship towards the opposition.

And the best cricket teas in the county!
