U12s Eagles

In the last match of the season, Merstham's Under 12 Eagles visited Caterham, a team languishing at the bottom of the East Surrey Colts League table. After recent strong performances, Merstham were keen to end the season on a high.

Caterham won the toss and put Merstham in to bat, and opening pair Theo R and Charlie R were quick off the mark, scoring runs with some beautiful strikes and a number of fours between them.

With Theo caught on the boundary for 20, Charlie went through two partners cheaply before Dominic Flynn came to the crease.

The pair worked well together before Charlie retired on 27.  Dom continued to reach a season’s best of 25, prompting his retirement, and the final batsmen, U11 players Adam and Alvin saw 24 runs added to the total.  With the addition of the extras from Caterham as well as the runs off the bat, Merstham reached 146-3 from their 20 overs.

Merstham’s bowlers put Caterham under early pressure with Theo R trapping opening batsman LBW, and Theo was soon instrumental in running out Caterham’s other opener.  The pressure continued as Merstham fielded and bowled tightly, restricting the run opportunities.

Caterham lost a further four wickets through superb catches taken by Charlie, Theo R & Will Harrison, off the bowling of Dominic and Jasper (two wickets a piece).  Caterham managed only 87 runs from their 20 overs, leaving Merstham U12 Eagles with an emphatic and very well deserved win.

After the match, captain Matthew Greaves presented medals to brothers Theo and Charlie who have since returned to Spain.  Their short spell in the team lifted the performances of all the players, and it is hoped they can return again next season.
