June 7th Club XI home vs Caterham
Godstone Village 20/20 Cricket Festival
Merstham 116 for 6, Caterham 117 for 8
Caterham Win by 2 wickets.
We made a glorious exit with only three balls remaining from the Godstone 20/20 Cricket festival after drawing favourites Caterham on Wednesday 7th June.

We were inserted and made a sluggish start, only opener Dave Neal (24) offering some aggressive resistance. James Lowe (12) continued in similar vein while Andy Pearce (16 ) intelligently kept the score-board ticking over. Ray Shinners (24 ) when joined by Ritchie Feist ( 19no) raised the tempo in the last few overs with a stand of 33 to set a competive 117 to win.

In reply Shinners (4 overs for 11) bowled the opener in the first over and with Bobby Sharp (4 overs for 17) bowling accurately the first eight overs cost only 28 with two wickets down. Caterham were consistently behind the required rate and some outstanding catches in the deep from Chris Wiggeley, Richard Feist and Bobby Sharp built up the pressure. Only some late hitting saw Caterham home in an excellent match.

Our club team featured a genuine mix of players from all five teams who did the club great credit on the day.

Its been very busy at the Merstham media centre handled by Bernard and Graeme we have been visited by Sky News. The Daily Telegraph. NewsRadio 5Live. BBC Southern counties radio...all to do with the drought and the effect it will have on our ground and club. We made a good case so now we hope someone will listen to us......

May 29th 1st XI home to Old Grammarians
Fullers Surrey County League Cup – Second Round.
Old Grammarians 172 for 9, Merstham 83 for 9
Lost by 89 runs.
Availability issues meant a club XI were selected against lofty opponents. Poor weather up to the match meant that far away travellers Dave Mann and Gary Lomas were stood down and with captain Danny Feist unavailable Ray Shinners stood in. He started well by winning the toss !
Old Grammarians were inserted after a 30 minute delay on a wet wicket and were allowed to make only steady progress against ten men, losing wickets regularly and never arising above four + an over due to accurate, straight bowling, notably from Joe Shinners (7 overs for 26) Poul Hughes (8 overs for 33) and Ray Shinners (8 overs for 23). As they looked to accelerate David Loaders flight and spin gave him 3 – 25 of his 8 overs, the opposition finishing 172 for 9 of 41 overs.
Heavy rain coincided with tea but when Merstham started their reply the opening pair of Thomas and Van Zilj swept us away. By the 10th over we were 17 for 7 and stubborn work from Shinners (10) prolonged the innings with Simon Rivers. Batting last with Loader, Rivers then accelerated with an outrageous innings of 51 ( in front of parents !) which included three 6’s before he was stumped !! Special mention must be made of Steve Payne who took four catches as reserve wicket-keeper and Chris Lowe who turned out at very short notice, as did a high class Feist tea..
